Do no harm

Level of service in Thailand is very high. There will be at least a few employees in the shop ready to pick up the goods that you've selected and bring it over to the counter while you're continuing your shopping. With reverence and smile.

THE soup

One piece of food I can not live without, is Tom Yam Goong, a hot and sour soup with shrimps, ginger and lemongrass as the main ingredients.

Typical street view of Thailand's small resort town

Before our first visit to Thailand, four years ago, we imagined it will look something like Switzerland in tropics.
Not at all. Even if there is a huge number of tidy and fine resorts and spas throughout the country, the main street of a small resort town will look pretty much like the one below.

Luck in the air

When sun sets, tourists go home, change their clothes, and stream towards the beach, where local resorts and restaurants had already prepared tables and lit illuminations. At the same time, traders of "lucky" paper balloons start passing by, trying to sell their wares.

Pros and cons of tailor service in Thailand

If you come to Thailand, let a tailor make a suit for you. He will have a nice selection of materials, and the latest catalogues of Armani, Hugo Boss, and the rest of the lot. I trust that behind the lines you can clearly see my message: "He will make an exact copy of any suit in catalogue". For a fraction of the price which you'd pay back home. Unless of course, you live in Vietnam.

Laptop repair for beginners

Before our trip I asked the readers for a suggestion if I should take a laptop with me.
Eventually I did. It proved a great help in storing and organizing photographs, accessing email, entertaining with a movie or two.
It went along to every country visited, via land or water, road or rail.
And it started showing signs of weariness. Firstly, the display started showing a green vertical band, then DVD device stopped reading some discs. Battery lasts only 10 minutes nowadays.
I was patient.
But when graphics card lost is ability to do the hardware acceleration, I've decided to take measures. Meaning, take it apart and look the problem in the face.
Now the laptop looks like this:

Taking vacation from vacationing

Soft and warm evening breeze. Sun setting behind the sea. Table standing on the beach. Deliciously barbecued fresh fish. Good company.
I love having vacation from the vacation.

You win, you lose

There has been a flood in Koh Samui a few weeks ago. CNN had a report on it, as a result - tourist flow decreased. Local authorities say the journalists overreacted.

Those visiting the place right now are happy to find out that a night in a resort like this just got cheaper.

Gradual ND filters and Margaritas

Read this post only if you are interested in photography.

Making a technically good photograph during the sunset or sunrise is difficult due to one factor - the sky is usually much brighter than the land. Which makes either the land very dark and without detail, or the sky badly overexposed.

Usability, the Aussie way

Being in a country as a transit destination (in our case from New Zealand to Thailand), I like to have it as easy and comfortable as possible.
Not worrying about anything, until the connecting flight arrives.
But it's not working in Australia. After changing the money with a goal to get some coffee, you get metal coins.
